ZEROZERO is a social spot for the UN albinism awareness campaign. We collaborated with rapper and activist ROBEN X from Memphis (USA) as well as sound designer Marco Schnebel (Germany) and film musician Alexander Wolf David (Germany) to create this one.
Personal background: As a little child I was once asked if I was 'albino'. The reason for the other kid to ask me this question was perhaps my light blonde and almost white hair color. At that time, I didn’t know what the other kid was talking about. My mother afterwards told me about people with albinism and explained to me why people with albinism often have to overcome huge obstacles in their lifes in comparison to humans with a regular melanin production. In late 2017 I remembered the conversation with my mom and chose 'albinism' as topic for my thesis project at Filmakademie Baden-Württemberg – I wanted to dedicate my time to a social issue that needed support.
Albinism describes a rare, non-contagious and genetically inherited condition which occurs worldwide regardless of ethnicity or gender. It mostly results in the lack of melanin pigment in the hair, skin and eyes – causing vulnerability to sun exposure which unfortunately often leads to skin cancer. Albinism is often misunderstood – both socially and medically. The appearance of persons with albinism is often the object of wrong beliefs and myths influenced by superstition, which foster their social exclusion. This leads to various forms of stigma, mobbing and discrimination.
ZEROZERO is a social spot which is intended to bridge the gap between the audience and people with albinism. So that a better understanding for the situation of people with albinism arises. We created this spot for the United Nations Website about albinism: @albinism.ohchr.org
ZEROZERO orignally started out as a project about raising awareness of the medical aspects of people with albinism. But it became something different. It developed into a project about raising your own voice with great self-confidence plus raising it for other people in need as well. I am incredibly grateful that ROBEN X and his manager Richard were joining this project. Without them ZEROZERO would not have become what it is right now. I hope that the audience gets inspired by ROBEN X's story and that the project itself can be a contribution to values as respect, togetherness, acceptance and kindness.
